Eyes First: The Complete Vision Course for School-based Occupational Therapy Practitioners

Employer Approval Tips

Secure your employer’s support for Eyes First: The Complete Vision Course for School-based Occupational Therapy Practitioners

This course is more than just professional development — it is an investment in your skills, the students you serve, and your team. Use the tips below to secure your employer’s support.

1. Start with Why It Matters

Think about your current caseload:

  • How many kids have vision problems you are not trained to spot?
  • Which students are not making progress because vision issues are being missed?
  • How confident are you assessing vision challenges?

Frame your request around a real scenario:

“I have been noticing students struggling with reading and handwriting that does not seem motor-related. I think there are underlying vision challenges I am not catching. Eyes First Vision would give me the skills to identify these problems early and intervene effectively.”

2. Connect the Course to Your Role

Highlight the modules that speak directly to your caseload:

  • Module 5: Vision, Reading, and Dyslexia — covers the connection between vision and literacy that comes up constantly in special education caseloads
  • Module 8: Vision Treatment Ideas — provides intervention strategies that fit into your actual school day

The skills you bring back will strengthen your assessment, documentation, and intervention practices — benefiting not just you, but the students and colleagues you work with every day. (See brochure.)

3. Lay Out the Details

Come prepared with the details your employer needs to say yes.

What is included: Self-paced, online. 6 months access (180 days). 0.7 AOTA CEUs, 7 contact hours, Approval ID #13717.

4. Make Your Request Count

The timing and approach of your request both matter:

  • Ask early, before professional development budgets are set for the year.
  • Request a dedicated meeting, in person or by video — this request deserves more than a quick email.
  • Be positive, direct, and ready to answer your employer’s questions.

Confidence in your request sends a clear message — this is not optional professional development. It is the right step for your students, your practice, and your team.
